Steel has, for centuries, been used to build or reinforce many man-made structures in the world, from buildings and bridges, to pipelines and power stations. However, steel has the tendency to succumb to environmental stresses resulting in its corrosion. Steel corrosion is a major problem as it can completely destroy the integrity of the structures in question. Despite the fact that patching the problem is simple and relatively inexpensive, further down the line each patch becomes more and more costly and leads to a weakened structure that may eventually need complete replacement.


NMT® Electrodes Mixed Metal Oxide and Platinised Titanium Anodes in Cathodic Protection systems are the solution to this problem. We aim to prevent corrosion in new structures and mitigate corrosion in existing ones. Use of our Cathodic Protection products will prevent or considerably delay the significant capital output required for the replacement of weakened and unsafe structures, hereby increasing their lifespans and being more economical in the long run.         


Cathodic Protection (CP) is a technique whereby corrosion of a metal surface is controlled or prevented by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell, hence, the manufacture of Mixed Metal Oxide and Platinised Titanium Anodes. Our anodes are known worldwide for their extremely low coating consumption rate, low internal resistance and high stability in harsh environments (including environments where Cl2, O2 or a combination of both is evolved). NMT® Electrodes Mixed Metal Oxide and Platinised Titanium Anodes also exhibit optimised current distribution, optimised polarisation and optimised current output.


The construction, current density and electrolyte characteristics often determine the size and shape of the anode that is required for a particular application. Applications that our anodes have been used in include, but are not limited to, oil and gas pipelines, water pipelines, above and below ground storage tanks, reinforced steel in concrete, ships hulls, jetties and wharves and condenser water boxes in power stations.
